End of Summer, Breeze Through Autumn

Sum up End of Summer, Breeze through Autumn
Wow, a month has already gone by since Labor Day! That’s how busy we have been here. Here’s a summation of late summer:
On August 23rd the Creede Early Learning Center had their first Upper Rio Grande Tour of Homes with eleven homeowners participating. The homes ranged from 900 sq. ft to about 3000 sq. ft. and were all in a 5 mile radius of Creede proper. The CELC also hosted the reception and a Silent Auction to complete the Tour fundraiser. The Center called it a great success with funds raised, volunteers and participants. They are already making plans for next year; considerations for homes and volunteer coordination. If you want to be involved in 2015, give them a call at 719-658-2090.
The next weekend brought us to the Creede Mountain Runs, the Annual Salsa Fiesta, Gravity Derby, The Balloon Festival and ATV Rodeo. The Mountain Runs brought over 165 runners and walkers to the Bachelor Loop. They walk or run a 2 mile, run a 12 mile or a 22 mile challenge over the Bachelor loop and back to town. Our runners aged from 10 to 83 – Woody Whitlock at 83 years young ran the 22 mile and finished with the time of 6 hours, 16 minutes and 7 seconds! The top runners were as follows:
2 mile walk – Emily McComas and Charlie Casey
2 mile run – Samuel Lorenz and Sarai Rizzi
12 mile run – Joshua Meerick and Kelly Lamb
22 mile run – Christopher Westerman and Laura Buckholz

Salsa Fiesta tested the taste buds with 17 different salsas from 13 businesses. Over 330 tasters roamed through town sampling salsas while visiting restaurants, shops and galleries. The local businesses prepare to serve about 400 ticket holders with their best salsa recipe in support of the chamber. In return the chamber rewards that winning business (chamber member) with a banner on the Creede.com website until the next event, a value over $300. The winner is voted for by those valued ticket holders! This year’s winners are as follows:
Red – Coffee on the Fly
Green – Kip’s Grill
Fruit – Creede Olive Oil Company
Freestyle – Loverings Gallery
Overall – Abbey Lane Gallery – Red
Sunday brought us the Gravity Derby and Creede’s Main Street lined with spectators! We had just a few competing vehicles but a great time was had by all. The competitors race for first place trophies and bragging rights! Although a last place trophy is also given to the slowest adult racer; this year that race team was the Cowgirls Cadillac. This was these ladies' second attempt at racing this year and they have plans to return in 2015. We also have four promised racing machines from Texas schools to add to next year’s group! The Balloon Festival was created by and is hosted by Creede Mining Heritage, Inc. This year they brought in sixteen balloons which flew Saturday and Sunday. A balloon glow held Saturday night gathered together lots of people for food, live music and libations at Sieme Park.
The ATV Rodeo this year was the best yet. Over thirty participants on ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes raced and competed in this challenging obstacle course. It is a course for agility and speed and is located at the Mineral County Fairgrounds on Airport Road and is hosted by the same. It is also sponsored by the Creede Elks Lodge #506.
Fall colors rolled in with the Cruisin’ the Canyon Car Show and the Silver Threads Quilt Guild. Over 75 cars shined on Creede’s main street and laid host to rocking oldies music, a hamburger fry by the Creede Elks Lodge, the rod run to Freemon’s General Store for dinner and a Fly-In breakfast at Mineral County’s Municipal Airport. Drivers toured all the way from southern New Mexico and right here is Creede with our own 1954 Ford Firetruck! Best in Show this year went to a 1967 Plymouth Satellite belonging to Norman and Lorraine Medina.
While summer has come to an end the end of the year isn’t here yet! Coming up at the end of the year we have a Halloween Party in the works followed by Thanksgiving and the Chocolate Festival! More information will come on these events in the coming weeks!
