Wednesday, August 25:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “The Singing Sands.” Discover the Great Sand Dunes’ symphony of audible geological processes.  Sing songs and discover connections to water, ‘singing sand’, and lightning-struck sand.  Dunes Parking Lot. 40 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot.

45 minutes.

8:00 p.m. Evening Program  “The Great Sand Dunes...and Mars.”   How is research at the Dunes helping scientists understand Mars?  Amphitheater. 45 minutes.

Thursday, August 26:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “Walking On Water.”  Sand, wind, and water make a remarkable landscape here.  Dunes Parking Lot.  45 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot. 

45 minutes.

7:00 p.m.  Sunset Program “Tale of Two Tigers.” Discover the unusual lives of the Great Sand Dunes tiger beetle and the tiger salamander, and meet a live salamander.  Good program for all ages!  Amphitheater.  30 minutes.

8:00 p.m. Evening Program “Here Kitty, Kitty.” Explore the lives of mountain lions, bobcats and lynx in the Rockies. Amphitheater.  45 minutes.  

Friday, August 27:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “The Story of the Big Dunes.” Why here - why are there dunes in this high mountain valley? Dunes Parking Lot. 45 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot. 

45 minutes.

7:00 p.m. Sunset Program “Antlers, Horns and the Critters Who Wear Them.”   Hands-on animal identification.   Amphitheater.  30 minutes.

8:00 p.m. Evening Program “Refuge.”  Tour some of the many special units in the National Park system, a retreat from everyday living.  Amphitheater. 45 minutes.

Saturday, August 28:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “A Grain of Sand.”  Discover some of the intricacies of the dune field and follow the wanderings of a sand grain.  Dunes Parking Lot. 30 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot. 

45 minutes.

8:30 p.m.  Evening Program “The Mountains Beyond.” Explore the forests, lakes, and tundra of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve through digital images, songs and a live salamander.  Amphitheater. 45 minutes.

Sunday, August 29:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “The Magic Balance.”  Stroll along Medano Creek and explore the unique balance of water, wind, and sand that creates and maintains the dunes. Dunes Parking Lot. 45 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot. 

45 minutes.

7:00 p.m.  Sunset Program “Traces of the Past.”  Discover some history and pioneer lore of the dunes.  Amphitheater.  45 minutes.

Monday, August 30:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “The Story of the Big Dunes.” Why here - why are there dunes in this high mountain valley? Dunes Parking Lot. 45 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot. 

45 minutes.

7:00 p.m. Sunset Program “Arrowheads, Atlatls, and Ancient Plant Uses.”  Get acquainted with some survival skills and tools of early cultures.  Amphitheater.

45 minutes.

Wednesday, September 1:

10:30 a.m. Nature Walk “Colorado’s Beach.” A mountain of sand, water, even waves!  How can this be at 8,000 feet above sea level ?  Dunes Parking Lot. 45 minutes.

1:30 p.m. Kids’ Program  Hands-on activities. Parents welcome. Dunes Parking Lot.

45 minutes.

7:00 p.m.  Sunset Program “Tale of Two Tigers.” Discover the unusual lives of the Great Sand Dunes tiger beetle and the tiger salamander, and meet a live salamander.  Good program for all ages!  Amphitheater.  30 minutes.

Warm layered clothing is recommended for evening programs.
