OTHER NORDIC OPTIONS

The San Juan Nordic Club grooms a number of trails in the San Luis Valley. Trail lists and maps may be found here > San Juan Nordic Trails <. The Hinsdale Haute Route maintans several yurts for skiiers and snowshoers in Hinsdale County. Information may be found here > Hinsdale Haute Route <. Unplowed forest roads are popular as are trails groomed for snowmobiles. If you go off trail, it is of particular importance that you remain aware of the potential for avalanches.  Avoid East Willow Creek above Creede, FSR 502, and other steep-walled canyons as they are subject to frequent avalanches.

When you ski, snowshoe or hike on snowmobile trails, please give the machines right-of-way and go to the side or off the trail when meeting snowmobiles or groomers. Snowmobile clubs groom these trails using funds provided by annual snowmobile registration fees. These trails are multi-use winter trails for the enjoyment of all; trail etiquette is important to minimize conflicts. Snowmobile trail maps for the eastern San Juan Mountains may be found with the links below:
