City of Creede

Creede City Hall: 719-658-2276

Creede is a statutory town governed by a Board of Trustees composed of a mayor and six council members. Officials are elected to four year terms on a staggered schedule. Elections occur in April of even-numbered years. Any registered voter, who has resided within the Creede city limits for 12 months prior to an election, may run for office upon submitting a nomination petition through the office of the City Manager. The Board of Trustees meets regularly on the first Tuesday of each month. The elected officials' annual compensation is Mayor, 5,000 annually, and Trustees, $2,000 annually.

The City of Creede supports the Creede Arts and Recreation Department which provides many beneficial activities and programs for the community. "City News," a monthly newsletter, is published by the City Manager's office. An annual subscription is available for $6.00 postage and handling. The City of Creede also has a Planning Commission composed of three residents and three trustees. In 2001, Creede received recognition from Governor Bill Owens as a "Colorado Heritage Community."

The Creede Maintenance Department is responsible for maintenance of city streets and alleys in summer and winter as well as operations and maintenance of the city's water and sewer systems. The city also cares for the city parks and the ballpark, and preps the city pond for ice skating in winter.

City revenues are generated through a 2% sales tax, Colorado Lottery funds, the Colorado Highway Users fund, city property taxes, and Enterprise Zones for the city water and sewer treatment facilities. The city oversees the Virginia Christensen Trust. Income from the $3 million fund is designated for community improvement projects through a grant process.

The City of Creede serves as a "big brother" to the Willow Creek Reclamation Committee which works with the EPA and other government agencies to clean up mining contamination in the Willow Creek drainage from the Continental Divide to the Rio Grande.
